TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

What a good idea for paddles in the Comox Valley area.

We have heard it said that an advanced level player is still an advanced level player no matter what paddle they use.  Of course, in our experience all of the advanced players use top end paddles from such brands as Selkirk, Paddletek etc.

We recommend that you let us know when you are playing in the Comox Valley general area and we will gladly deliver 3 paddles for you to try out in a match situation.  Of course, if we can get a game in or two as well, so much the better.

We have also heard that the paddle will choose the player with the player knowing when it "feels right".  It's just magic!

If you already know what you are looking for from such brands as Apex (Canadian), HEAD, Selkirk, Paddletek and Engage then call us for our best price and delivery schedule.

We look forward to working with you.  Pickleball Haven.

Price:  Wooden paddles start around $14.00 and increase from there. Starter paddles are perfect for kids and schools where equipment will be shared. Moving up from the wooden paddles, there are composite or graphite with Polymer, Nomex or Aluminium cores.  These paddles range from $45 to $195.  A high priced paddle does not necessarily mean it’s any better than a lower priced paddle for performance, any paddle is only as good as the hand wielding it.

Some manufacturers utilize less screen printing so the paddles have a simpler look.  This allows them to keep the cost lower. E.g. The Apex line of products.

Weight: Paddle weight is bar the most important factor when choosing a paddle. Weights range from 6.5 oz. to 12 oz., however a typical paddle will be between 6.9 oz. and 8.6 oz. Picking a paddle depends on your age, skill set, strength and whether you have any pre-existing injuries.
A small difference in the weight can make a big difference in how you play and although it does not sound like a big factor, it is the first consideration when choosing a paddle.

Paddle weight affects your swing speed and the time it takes to move the paddle into the right position. A lightweight paddle can get you to the ball quicker, if you can’t get to the ball, you have no chance of making a return shot.

A heavier paddle helps you drive the ball, faster but you can give up some control of the ball whilst a lighter paddle will give you greater control but with a bit less speed.

Please be aware that a heavier paddle can accelerate arm fatigue and joint strain.

Warranty: There is a wide range of warranties on paddles, anywhere from no warranty to lifetime warranties.  Beware of companies selling high priced paddles and providing only 30 day warranties (or no warranty).  Most reputable companies will offer at least a 90 day to one year warranties on their paddles.  Anything less than that will likely be an entry level paddle with a short lifespan.

Life Span:  A paddle that is in regular use should have a life span of 2 to 4 years.  For heavier hitters this will likely be closer to 2 years.  Most damage sustained seems to be contact between the paddle and the floor, other paddles, posts, whilst in the carry bag etc.,  and not as a result of the manufacturing process.

Grip Size: Each paddle is manufactured in a single grip size that varies from a 4” to 4-1/2” circumference.

  • Small - 4” circumference for small hands

  • Medium - 4-1/8” to 4-3/8” circumference fits most players

  • Large - 4-1/2” circumference for large hands

*You can always make a handle circumference larger by adding an over-grip, it is very difficult to make the handle size smaller.

Handle length:  More and more handles now seem to be 5” as there does not seem to be any loss of control using a longer handle.

In Summary:

  • A heavier paddle has more mass so it can provide more power to a player with a slower swing.

  • A lighter paddle is easier to get where you want it quickly, is easier for a faster swing and creates less stress on your arm and shoulder joints.
